Richard St. John’s Secrets for Success

I thought this TED talk aptly described what it takes to be a successful change agent and to overcome the resistance that we all naturally encounter when leading a change. Richard St. John  spent 10 years asking successful people what got them to where they are, and distilled it down to the following 8 key words:

  1. Have passion for what you do
  2. Work hard
  3. Practice, practice, practice until you’re really good at what you do
  4. Focus on your goal
  5. Push yourself through all obstacles you encounter (including the ones you inflict on yourself in terms of doubt, shyness, etc…)
  6. Serve others something of value
  7. Come up with ideas: listen, observe, remain curious, ask questions, solve problems, make connections
  8. Persist through failure, criticism, rejection, people who fight you (he used an alternate word that starts with an “a”), and pressure
